A stock car has one voice
Out of the box the cluster listens to the factory bus. Engine speed, road speed, coolant, throttle, gear: all of it arrives in frames the car has always sent, and the cluster decodes them the way the factory cluster did.
A stock car is the easy case. This was built for the other one: forced induction, a flex fuel kit, or a standalone running the whole show.
Two ECUs talking at once. One number on the screen.
The moment a car has a standalone ECU, it has two sources of truth for the same measurement. The factory modules do not stop broadcasting because you fitted a Haltech, and your Haltech does not know what the factory thinks. A display that simply shows whichever frame arrived last will flicker between two versions of your coolant temperature all day.
The cluster resolves this by ownership rather than by timing, and it keeps emulating the factory cluster for the rest of the car the whole time.
A flex fuel kit measures the ethanol content of the fuel as it flows, and that number moves. Half a tank of E85 on top of a quarter tank of pump 91 is not E85, and it is not what you told your tune it was. The cluster shows the blend the sensor is reporting, live, so you know what your engine is actually running on before you lean on it.
If the sensor comes loose or the fuel is contaminated, each of those is its own alert rather than a silently wrong number. You find out at the pump instead of at the top of third.

Manifold pressure arrives as one number and is useful as several. The cluster keeps absolute and gauge pressure separately, in kPa and in PSI, so boost and vacuum both read correctly on either side of atmospheric, and so the value on screen matches whatever your tuner talks in. Show it as a number, a bar or its own dial, in PSI, bar or kPa.
Pick your manufacturer and the stream it is configured to broadcast, and the cockpit becomes your dash. No adapter box, no second display stuck to the A-pillar.
Turbo or supercharged, the cockpit reads manifold pressure and shows boost and vacuum live. Absolute or gauge, in PSI, bar or kPa, as a number, a bar or its own dial.
Run a flex fuel kit and the cockpit shows the actual blend in the tank as you drive, not what you think you put in. Half a tank of E85 on a quarter tank of pump gas is neither, and your tune is making decisions on the difference.
Fuel pressure, oil pressure and coolant pressure, each watched against its own sensor range. A sensor reading impossibly high or low is called out as a sensor fault rather than quietly believed.
Contaminated fuel, or a flex fuel sensor that has come loose: each is its own alert, so you find out at the pump rather than at the top of third.
When your standalone provides a value, it owns that value and the factory reading for it is suppressed. The two never fight, and you never wonder which number you are looking at.
Swapped, boosted or fully standalone, the cockpit keeps emulating the factory cluster on the bus, so the rest of the car carries on as though nothing changed.
